Grilled Bananas with Passion Fruit Sauce

This is a nice, light, quick dessert. It's sweet and satisfying and feels a bit special, but, at the same time, is mostly fruit and contains very little in the way of added sugar or fat. And, as such, I feel very little guilt enjoying it after a meal.

If you wanted to make it extra special, you could serve it with a dollop of whipped cream on top. But, in all honesty, I don't feel it needs it and prefer to enjoy the fruit just as it is.

The preferred way of preparing the bananas is on a grill over hot coals. However, as the bananas soften as they cook, they can become somewhat difficult to handle on the grill grates. So I prefer to cook mine on a griddle (with a little butter) either over coals or on an indoor cooktop.

Grilled Bananas with Passion Fruit Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1-2 Tbsp. butter
  • 6-8 bananas1, peeled and halved both crosswise and lengthwise
  • 1 bottle of passion fruit sauce

Directions

  1. Melt the butter over medium heat. (Or oil the grill grates if cooking directly on the grill.)
  2. Place the bananas in the pan/griddle and cook until the underside begins to caramelize (~3 minutes).
  3. Flip and cook until the other side browns slightly and bananas are soft.
  4. Divide the bananas among bowls, spoon the warm passion fruit sauce over them, and serve.

1 You may wish to use more or less bananas depending on how saucy you like them. If you like a lot of sauce, then 6 will probably be plenty. If you'd like the focus to be more on the bananas with just a bit of sauce, then you may want to do 8 (or possibly even more) banans. Back
