Omnomberry Compote
I've hesitated in sharing any of the many omnomberry recipes that I have enjoyed over the years. Being endemic to Tyria, making omnomberry concoctions at home presents something of a challenge for the Terran home cook!
After many years of searching though, I believe that I have finally found a suitable substitute: serviceberries! Although these delicious (and surprisingly nutritious) little fruits are not exactly ubiquitous here, they are at least regionally available. Which makes them infintely better suited for Terran cooking than the locally non-existent omnomberry.
Serviceberries (also sometimes called juneberries or Saskatoon berries) are not a common commercial crop in Terra, so they will likely not be available for purchase most places. They do, however, grow wild in many parts of the North American continent, so you may be able to grow your own or harvest wild ones.
I am lucky enough to have a very productive Amelanchier canadensis (one of several species of serviceberries) growing in my front yard here, so I was able to make this most delicious sauce from some frozen berries saved from last year's harvest.
It's still not quite the same as the much-loved omnomberries of Tyria, but it's pretty darn close! And definitely worth trying if you can get your hands on some of these delicious Terran berries.
If you would like a thicker sauce, you may wish to add a cornstarch slurry to help give it a bit more body. And a little bit of lemon juice can help to balance and brighten the flavours, but is by no means necessary!
